"I won’t go on about Vista being late. Software is always late (hello, Mac OS X Leopard)."

Um. Let's try to keep things in perspective. Leopard will be a few months late, whereas Vista was many years late.

Geez, I can't believe people still do not see the difference. So let me explain it differently. No shower in one day makes you dirty. So does no shower for a week. But while dirty is dirty, you DO stink a lot more after a week. Better now?

Microsoft is going the route many `mega-corps` are, as you pointed out in your last paragraph. They think we need them more than they need us. Wrong again.

The UAC prompt is something that devs are likely to run into far more often than home users, so from that perspective, it is more of an annoyance. However, I think the benefit far outweighs the annoyance for the overall ecology of the world. On the one hand, people whine about Microsoft not doing enough for security, and then turn around and complain when Microsoft closes a major security hole in the OS.

I knew I'd be hearing from you, Aaron :-)

I can't say I'm too biased. I'm truly a cross-platform kind of guy :-) . I would guess that I use Windows Vista far more than Mac OS X. It's just that Vista has given me more to complain about. I did try to give the UAC the benefit of the doubt. I left it on for over a month on my initial Vista installation. But I found it to be such a pain that I've since disabled it. It seemed to come up quite frequently, but it may just be because I was installing and testing lots of software with Vista.

I don't think I referred to the Ribbon as an "abomination" :-) , but I really am not liking it.

@vistasucks -- sounds like Apple's only chance to succeed is for others to fail worse than they are. ;-)

Paul...come on man... let's try to be a little less biased, eh? ;-) Having used the Ribbon on an almost weekly basis, I can say that for me personally, the ribbon rocks. Half of the features of Office would be lost in the grass if it weren't for the ribbon. The entire point to it is to allow users to explore the application to find functionality and try it out without damaging their documents. While the ribbon isn't for everone, it's hardly an abomination.

As for UAC -- is it annoying? Yup, on the very rare occasions you ever see it. And it *is* rare for the average user. The upside is that the idiot driver and malware vendors no longer have a way to automatically dismiss dialogs for the user. It's an extreme measure, but a very sensible one that's driven by need.

You make some valid points, for sure. But you don't tell the whole story, either.
