After 10 days with my iPhone, some more thoughts:
Push E-Mail
I love that my MobileMe account has push e-mail, but I really would also like to have Push for Gmail as well. I use Google Apps to handle my mail for logicalvue.com, but doing a fetch every 15 minutes isn’t enough; I want it now! I also want the “read” status to transfer more quickly.
As a workaround, I’m forwarding my Gmail to Yahoo Mail (which works with Push). But that’s not entirely satisfying since mail I’ve read on the phone won’t show as read on Mac OS X Mail (and vice versa).
Based on some Google searches, I’m not the only one with this complaint, however.
Notifications
When I get a new E-mail, the iPhone vibrates and beeps. I’d love to be able to change the new mail sound to one of my custom ringtones, but that’s not to be.
More importantly, I’d love to know who the mail was from without having to exit the app I might be using. It seems like the phone could slide up an unobtrusive growl-type message on the screen with this information. I think the Palm Pre does something like this.
App Switching
Switching between apps is nowhere near as slick as it could be. You have to click the Home button and then find the app you want. I’d like to see a recently-used app switcher that would let me jump between apps without having to go back to the home screen. It seems like the existing app switcher in Mac OS X would work fine for this.
Overall, my iPhone continues to be the coolest gadget I’ve ever owned.
