If you participate in the REAL Software forums, you might know that I am now the official Community Evangelist for REALbasic and REAL SQL Server. The term “evangelist” is being thrown about a lot these does. What does it mean to be the community evangelist for REALbasic and REAL SQL Server?
It means, I want to see the community around REALbasic and REAL SQL Server grow and become more connected. Right now, information about REALbasic is scattered all over the internet and there isn’t that much information about REAL SQL Server yet. REALbasic is an excellent development platform for creating cross-platform desktop applications. More people need to know that. And REAL SQL Server is an excellent, fast, light-weight database server based on SQLite. A lot more people need to know that.
People often ask me why I use REALbasic? I answer with these three reasons:
- It lets me create desktop apps for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from one code base
- In particular, I like that I can develop on Mac OS X, but deploy to Windows (and test on Windows using the remote debugger)
- It is easier to learn and use than most alternatives
- It is easy to deploy applications because they are stand-alone and do not require any run-times or other components or installations
So, what community resources exist today? Here’s a brief summary:
- REAL Software Forums (about 4000 members)
- REAL Software Mailing List (unknown size)
- RBDevZone (about 500 members)
- FaceBook REALbasic Group (about 12 members)
I’m looking at leveraging some of the “web 2.0″ social networking sites to help increase REALbasic awareness.
I’ve set up a REALbasic “lens” on Squidoo, which once a day is updated with relevant REALbasic information from around the net.
I’ve also started using Facebook and Twitter. I’m still on the fence with these two, though. You can view my Twitters here. And if you’re on Facebook, feel free to add me as a friend.
I think my favorite site for making connections has been LinkedIn. You can view my profile here. And feel free to add me as a connection.
If you’re using REALbasic (or REAL SQL Server), or are thinking about using them, please shoot me a note, either via e-mail or here in the comments, with your thoughts. Heck, even if you think that using REALbasic would be a really horribly idea, I’d like to know about it.
